Absurdistan

Reportedly based on a true story (though with quite a bit of legendary embellishment, one assumes, at least in its more fantastical elements), “Absurdistan” takes place in a remote village where the women wage a full-fledged battle-of-the-sexes, agreeing to withhold their conjugal duties until the men in the community repair the pipe that for decades has brought water to the town. The story also features Tamelko (Max Mauff) and Aya (Kristyna Malerova) as two teenagers whose own plans to finally consummate their relationship must now be put on hold.Homespun in appearance and humanistic in tone, “Absurdistan” (a German film done in Russian) is highly reminiscent of those quirky Czech comedies that enjoyed such popularity here in the States back in the 1960s. The scenes set in the past have been deliberately designed to look like aging home videos - grainy, washed-out, and scratchy - while those set in the present are crisp, clean and bursting with color.The film blends small town humor with touches of magic realism and the occasional flight of fancy. There are times, admittedly, when the film gets a little too silly and cutesy for its own good, but, on the positive side, it never takes itself too seriously or condescends to its characters. The mood is upbeat and the details charming in what amounts to a modern-day (but not TOO modern-day) version of “Lysistrata.”

Grace

Being a mother, I think this film provides all aspects of horror; a normal woman would not like to go through. The film direction and cinematography were neat and quite realistic. Although the story might be predictable, the acting brought new perspective on this weird subject having a strange child with even more strange needs”. You can see the strong wish of the mother to keep the baby, giving all of her to the child. Emotionally, physically. Piece by piece. A classic fight of generations, little of selfishness too, fights without a personal barrier. I did not feel good watching this film. Horrifying child, mother capable to do anything gave me the creeps. But I could not stop myself watching it till the end, which can provide an interesting material for a sequel.

Strange Fits of Passion

`She’ (Noonan) is a self-obsessed twentysomething desperate to lose her virginity but unsure of why or how or to whom. A `curl-up-in-front-of-the-fire-with-a-cup-of-hot-chocolate-on-a-winter’s-night’ film for the 16-35 year old bracket: self-important, but identifiable, and it leaves you with those familiar warm fuzzies afterwards. Noonan does a terrific job, leading a cast of essentially unknowns (with the exception of Johnson, who would achieve international fame with his role in the acclaimed The Secret Life of Us, for a similar demographic) through a searching script that has nothing for action movie fans. The `she’ character is written well we can spot her flaws almost immediately, but, as with life, it is up to the individual to address them, and the way she goes about doing that provides us with angst-ridden, often cringe-able humour. Successful at film festivals, romantic will love it, but critics might find it to be a difficult sell.

Catica Ana

I saw this last month at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. The premise of this film was done before back in 1968 in the film Candy. You take a lovely nymph-like girl with a lot of hair and a beautiful body and build a series of disjointed, ridiculous sketch-like stories around her with the help of a big name actor or two and pretend it’s a comedy. This film does the same except it pretends to be a drama. The films title character Ana (Manuela Vells) is a gifted young artist living with her father Klaus (Matthias Habich) in a cave near Ibiza, Spain. Yes, they live in a cave but it’s quite nice and richly appointed for a cave dwelling. Newcomer Vells almost didn’t have the role as it was originally attached to actress Mara Valverde who wisely bowed out and you can only imagine if it was her refusal to do a certain scene in this film. One day a wealthy art patron from France named Justine (veteran international talent Charlotte Rampling) discovers the artistic potential in Ana and wants to cultivate her talent by setting her up in her exclusive art colony she runs in Madrid. Ana meets Linda (Bebe Rebulleto) who becomes her best friend and Said (Nicolas Cazal) who becomes her boyfriend. Ana discovers the doors to past lives through regressive hypnotism by an young American hypnotist named Michael (Asier Newman). The movie has you hooked for a while and you wonder where it’s going to go but once she heads for New York it rapidly falls apart as a film trying to hard to be an art film with a political and social message. The film looks horny with art direction by Montse Sanz and cinematography by Mario Montero and direction from the talented and celebrated, international film festival award winning Julio Medem. The film is dedicated to Medem’s sister Ana Medem whose actual artwork are featured through the film. Her Picassoesque style painting were to be shown at an exhibit in Valencia when on her way there she was tragically killed in a car accident. I hate to be critical of a film dedicated to someone who represents such a personal loss to it’s director but the story written by director Medem is so bad that I can’t help it. Watching this film you realize that this guy knows how to make a film but you wonder why he didn’t make one this time. It features some nudity and some prolonged unnecessary violence and I would give this a 5.5 out of 10 and not recommend it to a general audience.
